Why Frame Size Tells You Nothing About Frame Bag Fit

Here is the thing that catches people out. You order a full-frame bag for your 56cm gravel bike, it turns up, and it doesn't fit — or worse, it fits but eats both bottle mounts and you find that out in the middle of a hot day.

The problem is that almost every frame bag on the market is sold against a minimum seat tube length, and seat tube length is a lousy predictor of how much room is actually in your front triangle. We built a database of published geometry for 46 bikepacking and gravel bikes — 250 individual sizes — and computed the real front-triangle area for every one of them. The numbers are worse than we expected.

Three bikes, one top tube length, 72% difference in bag space

Take three frames with essentially the same effective top tube, the number most people reach for when they compare bikes:

Same reach across the top, near enough. But the Straggler gives you 72% more usable triangle than the Grappler. That is the difference between a full-frame bag and a half-frame bag, and nothing on the spec sheet warns you about it.

What separates them is top tube slope. The Grappler is a drop-bar trail bike with a hard-sloping top tube and a short seat tube. The Straggler is closer to traditional road geometry — a longer seat tube, a flatter top tube, and a big open triangle underneath it.

Why the seat tube number misleads

Seat tube length made sense as a proxy back when top tubes were horizontal. On a level-top-tube frame, seat tube length and triangle size move together, so a bag maker could say "fits 50cm and up" and be roughly right.

Modern frames broke that. A sloping top tube shortens the seat tube without shrinking the triangle much at all — the space is still there, it's just a different shape. So you get frames that fail a bag's stated minimum on paper while having plenty of room in reality.

Our own bag finder had this exact bug until recently. It compared your seat tube against each bag's stated minimum, and on a Salsa Cutthroat 52cm — a frame with a perfectly usable 891 cm² triangle — it called 10 of 12 frame bags "unlikely". They weren't unlikely. The comparison was just asking the wrong question.

The number that does work

Front-triangle area. It's the actual space the bag has to live in, and you can compute it from figures every manufacturer publishes: stack, reach, and seat tube angle. Across our 250 sizes it ranges from 813 cm² at the small end to 1933 cm² at the large, with a median of 1366 cm².

Rough reading of those numbers, for a full-frame bag:

  • Under 1000 cm² — half-frame territory. A full-frame bag will fit but you'll lose your bottle mounts and it'll be a shallow wedge.
  • 1000–1400 cm² — most bikes land here. A full-frame bag works, though you'll likely be moving water to the fork or bars.
  • Over 1400 cm² — genuinely roomy. Full-frame bag plus a bottle inside the triangle on many frames.

The bit almost nobody mentions: your size matters more than your bike

This surprised us. Within a single model, triangle area roughly doubles from the smallest size to the largest:

So "which frame bag fits a Cutthroat" is not a question with one answer. A 60cm Cutthroat and a 52cm Cutthroat are, for bag purposes, close to different bicycles. If you ride a small frame, this is why your options feel thin — and it's worth knowing that it's the geometry, not you.

How to measure your own triangle

You need three numbers and five minutes. No special tools.

  1. Seat tube, along the tube. From the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube where the post goes in.
  2. Top tube, horizontally. Not along the tube — level, from the head tube back to the seatpost. That's the effective top tube, and it's what bag makers mean.
  3. Down tube. Bottom bracket centre to the bottom of the head tube.

Measure in centimetres, or if you're pulling numbers off a geometry chart, remember every manufacturer publishes in millimetres. Entering 560 where a tool wants 56 is the single most common mistake, and it usually produces a confident, completely wrong answer.

Then check the two clearances that catch people after the bag is already bought:

  • Bottle mounts. Hold the bag shape against the frame. A full-frame bag usually kills both inside mounts. Fork cages and a top tube bag are the usual fix.
  • Cable runs. External rear brake and derailleur housing along the down tube gets squashed by a tightly strapped bag. Not fatal, but it wears the housing and can affect shifting.

What to do with this

If you know your bike, our geometry database has the published numbers and a scale drawing of the triangle for 46 bikes across 250 sizes — pick your model and size and the area is computed for you. If you'd rather work from your own measurements, the bag finder checks every bag we track against them and tells you which ones clear.

And if the answer comes back tight, half-frame bags are not a consolation prize. They keep your bottles, they're easier to load on the move, and on a small frame they often carry more usable volume than a full-frame bag squeezed into a shallow wedge.
