Best Bikepacking Bags for 2026: Picked by Measurement

Most bag roundups tell you which bag is best. We cannot honestly do that — this site does not field-test, so an opinion from us about how a fabric wears is worth nothing.

What we can do is something no gear magazine does: run every bag we hold measured dimensions for against every frame we hold published geometry for, and rank on the answers. So each pick below comes with the rule it was chosen by, printed next to it. Argue with the rule.

The numbers come from 52 bags with measured dimensions and 80 frame sizes drawn from manufacturers' own geometry charts. Discontinued bags are excluded from every pick.

Best frame bag: Topeak MidLoader 6L

Criterion: the most capacity among frame bags that fit every one of the 80 smallest frame sizes we can draw.

6 L · 337 g · $93

Topeak MidLoader 6L is the largest frame bag here that clears every small frame in the database. That is a deliberately harsh test — 7 of the 12 frame bags we measure pass it — and it is the one that matters, because the usual failure is buying a bag that fits the bike in the photograph rather than the bike in your shed.

If you ride a large frame you have more choice than this, and the bag finder will tell you exactly how much more when you give it your own measurements.

Best handlebar bag: Apidura Expedition Handlebar Pack 14L

Criterion: the most capacity among handlebar bags that span 40 cm or less.

14 L · 33 cm across · 275 g · $251

Start with the constraint rather than the bag. Of the 13 handlebar bags we measure, 3 span 40 cm or less. The rest are wider than a road drop bar before you have accounted for hoods, cable runs or the harness itself — they are built for flat bars, whatever the marketing says.

Apidura Expedition Handlebar Pack 14L carries the most of the ones that fit, at 33 cm across. That combination is rarer than it should be, which is the finding: on drop bars you are not choosing from 13 bags, you are choosing from 3.

Best seat pack: Apidura Expedition Saddle Pack 17L

Criterion: the most litres carried per kilogram of bag.

17 L · 425 g · 40 L per kg · $237

A seat pack is the one bag where its own weight is worth watching, because it hangs on a lever behind the saddle and every gram of empty bag is a gram you carry to no purpose. Apidura Expedition Saddle Pack 17L carries more volume per gram of itself than anything else we measure.

That rule deliberately favours large packs — a bigger bag amortises its hardware better — so if you want a small one, read the figure rather than the ranking.

Best top tube bag: Apidura Racing Long Top Tube Pack 2L

Criterion: the narrowest across, with capacity breaking a tie.

2 L · 4.6 cm wide · 210 g · $115

Width is the only spec on a top tube bag your body argues with. Anything broad enough to catch a knee on every pedal stroke will annoy you out of using it by the second day, whatever it holds. Apidura Racing Long Top Tube Pack 2L is the narrowest we measure at 4.6 cm.

What this guide will not tell you

Whether the fabric lasts. Whether the zip survives a winter. Whether the mount rattles loose on washboard. Those are the things a roundup written from riding would cover and this one cannot, because we have not ridden them — and a confident sentence about durability from a site that measures rather than rides is exactly the kind of thing worth distrusting elsewhere too.

What we hold is the measurements, where they came from and when they were checked. How we check this data sets that out, including the corrections.

Start from your bike, not from a list

Every pick above answers a general question. Yours is specific: this frame, this size, these bars. The bag finder takes your measurements and checks every bag we hold dimensions for against them — and reports how many it had to exclude for missing data rather than quietly dropping them.
