Why we built this, and how we review gear.
Choosing bikepacking gear is overwhelming. There are hundreds of bags, shelters, sleep systems, and tools on the market, and the specs that actually decide whether something fits your bike are scattered across fifteen manufacturer sites in four different units.
So that is the job we picked: put every product in one place, with verified specs, real dimensions, and tools that answer the questions spec sheets don't — will this bag fit my frame, what does this loadout weigh, and what am I giving up at this price.
What we do and don't do
We are a specs-and-fit database first, not a field-test publication. We haven't ridden all 244 products here and we don't pretend to have. What we do is verify manufacturer specifications, record real dimensions, and compare every product against every other product in its category. Where a page draws on first-hand riding experience, it says so and it's Brian's. Where it reports durability or real-world behaviour we haven't seen ourselves, it says that too.
We used to put a star rating on most products. We have removed all of them. They were generated in bulk rather than earned, no source was ever recorded for any of them, and the shape of the numbers gave it away: 219 scores between 3.5 and 4.8, nothing below 3.5, across stoves, socks, tents and radar units. An outside audit asked us to document how the scores were calculated. There was nothing to document, so we took them down rather than invent a method after the fact.
What replaces them is what we can show our working for: weights and prices against the median for the same category, how many of the 451 frame sizes a bag actually fits, packed volumes derived from the maker's own published figures. If a number is on this site, you should be able to ask where it came from and get an answer.
We are still earning that. Checking this catalogue against manufacturers found something wrong on most of the records we had generated rather than sourced — wrong weights, wrong prices, and a handful of products that turned out not to exist at all. So far 137 of 244 products carry a price or weight read off the maker's own page, with the link and the date on the product page. The rest say, on the page, that they have not been checked yet. That is less flattering than saying nothing, and a good deal more use to you.
Who Reviews This
Brian Williams is an avid cyclist and bikepacker who has been riding loaded since 2020. He rides a Salsa Cutthroat and has bikepacked long rail-trail routes including the Katy Trail across Missouri. He reviews every guide, comparison, and gear entry published here, checking fit and compatibility claims against real riding. Where a page reports specifications rather than first-hand use, it says so.
Here is how a page actually gets published here, because most sites don't say and the order matters. Nothing goes out until it passes an automated gate — thirty checks covering data consistency, numeric claims, dead links, orphaned pages, whether our own diagrams still match the data they were drawn from, and whether any figure contradicts the record it came from. Brian reviews what is published rather than reading every page before it ships, and his name is on all of it either way.
That is a real trade and worth being plain about: machines catch the arithmetic faster and more reliably than a person re-reading, and a person catches what machines cannot. What it means for you is that corrections happen in public and after the fact — this page carries several — rather than nothing ever being wrong. If something here is wrong, one named person is accountable for it and the contact address below reaches him.

Affiliate relationships never influence which products we list or the order we list them in — and here that is checkable rather than a promise. Every ranking on this site is a sort on a measured number: packed pole length, chainstay clearance, front-triangle area, weight, price. All 18 of them state the figure they sorted on, at the top of the list. There is no editor's-pick column for a commission to land in, which is also why the star ratings are gone: a number you can't trace is a number you shouldn't trust, and that applies to ours.
