Thinlight 1/8" Foam Pad

The Gossamer Gear Thinlight might be the highest value-per-gram item in any bikepacker's kit. At 57 grams and $22, this simple sheet of closed-cell foam performs at least three critical functions, and creative bikepackers find even more uses for it on the trail.

As a sit pad, it transforms any surface — wet ground, rocky ledges, cold picnic benches — into a comfortable seat. Bikepackers spend significant time sitting at rest stops, lunch spots, and camp, and having something to sit on besides cold, wet ground is a comfort multiplier that's easy to undervalue until you've been without it. Folded in half, it's thick enough to insulate against cold surfaces and cushion against rough ones.

As supplemental sleeping pad insulation, the Thinlight adds roughly R-0.5 to R-1.0 when placed beneath an inflatable pad. For three-season use, this boost can extend an inflatable pad's comfort range into cooler nights. Place it under your torso section for maximum effect. More importantly, it acts as a puncture-protection layer between rocky ground and your expensive inflatable pad — cheap insurance for a $150+ air mattress.

As a frame bag stiffener, cut to size and slipped inside a frame bag, the Thinlight helps the bag maintain its shape and prevents gear from creating pressure points against the frame. This is a common trick among experienced bikepackers that improves both bag performance and ride comfort.

The closed-cell foam is non-absorbent, so it won't soak up ground moisture or spilled water. It wipes clean in seconds and dries instantly. Unlike open-cell foam, it maintains its insulating properties even when wet. The material is moderately durable — it won't last forever with daily use, but at $22, replacement is painless.

Sizing options typically include torso-length (20" × 36") and full-length versions. For bikepacking, the torso-length version is the sweet spot — it covers the essential seating and sleeping functions while packing small enough to slip alongside gear in a frame bag or rolled around a handlebar bag.

There's essentially no downside to carrying one of these. The weight is negligible, the packed size fits into dead space in your bags, and the utility spans the entire trip from first rest stop to final camp. It's the kind of gear that experienced bikepackers add to their permanent kit list and never remove.
