Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT Review
Tested and reviewed for bikepacking use
The XLite has been the ultralight pad benchmark for a decade, and the NXT version adds a quieter fabric and improved baffles. At 354g with an R-value of 4.5, it handles 3-season use comfortably. The WingLock valve inflates and deflates quickly.
The Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite has been the sleeping pad that every other ultralight pad is measured against for over a decade. The NXT version refines the formula without reinventing it — and that's exactly what the bikepacking community wanted.
At 354g for the regular size, the XLite NXT is the lightest sleeping pad you can buy that still provides genuine three-season warmth. The R-value of 4.5 means it handles temperatures down to around 20°F (-7°C) before you start feeling the cold ground beneath you. For bikepacking trips from spring through fall — and even shoulder-season winter rides in moderate climates — this pad has you covered.
The biggest improvement in the NXT version is the fabric. Previous XLite generations were notoriously crinkly — every time you shifted in your sleep, the pad sounded like a bag of chips. The NXT uses a softer, quieter face fabric that dramatically reduces the noise. It's not silent (no air pad is), but it's no longer the sleep-disrupting crinkle fest of the original.
Therm-a-Rest's Triangular Core Matrix baffles are the engineering trick that makes the XLite so warm for its weight. Instead of simple horizontal baffles, the triangular design creates hundreds of small air cells that trap warm air more effectively than traditional designs. This is how they achieve an R-value of 4.5 in a pad that weighs barely more than a can of soda.
The WingLock valve is a genuine improvement over older screw-top designs. One large valve handles both inflation and deflation, with a flat profile that doesn't dig into your back. Inflation takes about 10-15 breaths (or use a stuff sack as a pump to avoid moisture buildup). Deflation is fast — open the valve wide, roll the pad, and you're packed in under a minute.
Packed size is excellent at 3.5" x 9" — small enough to fit inside your frame bag alongside other items. For bikepackers, this is critical. Every cubic inch of packing space matters when you're distributing gear across bags.
The downsides: it's expensive at $220 for a sleeping pad. The 20" width is narrow — side sleepers and larger riders will feel the edges. And while the NXT is quieter than its predecessors, it still makes more noise than foam pads or the Nemo Tensor. If you're a light sleeper sharing a tent, consider the Tensor instead.
But for the weight-conscious bikepacker who wants the lightest possible warm sleeping pad and is willing to pay for it, the NeoAir XLite NXT remains the benchmark. It's the pad we pack when every gram matters.
Who Is the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite NXT Best For?
The definitive ultralight sleeping pad for 3-season bikepacking. If that describes your riding style, the NeoAir XLite NXT should be at the top of your shortlist. It sits in the Sleep Systems category alongside 11other products we've reviewed.
How It Compares
At 354g and $220, the NeoAir XLite NXT is 104g heavier than the lightest option in this category (the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir UberLite at 250g). The most budget-friendly option is the Klymit Static V Lite at $65.
The price-to-weight ratio comes in at $62 per 100g — a premium price point, but you're paying for quality, materials, and design that justify the investment for serious bikepackers.
