Tarptent StratoSpire 1

The Tarptent StratoSpire 1 is an ingeniously designed single-wall tent that addresses the main complaint about single-wall shelters — condensation. Through careful geometry and strategic mesh paneling, designer Henry Shires created a tent where the walls angle away from the sleeper, allowing condensation to form and run down without contacting you or your gear.

At 765 grams with two trekking poles (not included), the StratoSpire 1 is remarkably light for the interior volume it provides. The twin-peak design creates a spacious interior with headroom at both ends. You can sit up comfortably anywhere in the tent, which is unusual for a sub-800-gram shelter. The dual vestibules provide protected gear storage on both sides.

The single-wall design uses a sil/PU coated fabric that is waterproof and reasonably breathable. The lower mesh panels promote airflow that carries moisture out before it condenses on the inner walls. In practice, this works well in most conditions, though very cold and humid nights can still produce some condensation.

Setup uses two trekking poles in a crossed configuration at the peaks. Bikepackers who do not carry trekking poles can use Tarptent's optional carbon fiber poles. The pitch is straightforward once you learn the sequence, and the tent tensions beautifully when properly staked. Six stakes provide a rock-solid pitch.

Compared to the Tarptent ProTrail Li, the StratoSpire offers much more interior space and two vestibules at the cost of higher weight. Compared to double-wall tents at this weight, like the Durston X-Mid 1, the StratoSpire trades the inner mesh tent for a lighter, simpler design.

For bikepackers who want generous interior space, good weather protection, and light weight in a trekking-pole shelter, the StratoSpire 1 is one of the most thoughtfully designed options available.
