Showers Pass is headquartered in Portland, Oregon, where rain isn't occasional weather — it's a lifestyle. The Refuge jacket reflects that pedigree with no-compromise waterproofing that actually works across the sustained, soaking downpours that characterize multi-day bikepacking in wet climates.

The 3-layer Artex membrane provides a 20K/15K waterproof-breathability rating, placing it solidly in the "genuinely waterproof" category rather than the "water-resistant until it's not" territory occupied by cheaper alternatives. All seams are tape-sealed, and the zippers are water-resistant YKK Aquaguard units. After hours of riding through continuous rain on Oregon's coast, the interior stays dry. That's the promise, and Showers Pass delivers on it.

Breathability is the eternal challenge with fully waterproof jackets, and the Refuge manages it better than most through generous pit zips and the Artex membrane's 15K breathability rating. At moderate effort levels — typical bikepacking pace — we found the jacket manageable in temperatures up to about 12°C before condensation buildup became uncomfortable. Unzip the pits and the front zipper partway, and you can push that a few degrees higher.

The cycling-specific cut shows thoughtful design. The drop tail extends well below the waist in a riding position, blocking spray from the rear wheel. Articulated sleeves allow full reach to the handlebars without the jacket riding up at the wrists. The collar is high enough to seal against driving rain but lined with microfiber to prevent neck chafe over long hours.

Reflective details are extensive — 3M Scotchlite panels on the chest, back, and arms provide 360-degree visibility in low light. Given that heavy rain and low light often coincide, this visibility integration is practical rather than decorative.

At $200 and 310 grams, the Refuge isn't the lightest or cheapest rain jacket option. Ultralight emergency shells weigh half as much and cost less. But those shells are miserable to ride in for hours — they trap heat, stick to skin, and feel like wearing a garbage bag. The Refuge is a jacket you can comfortably wear all day in the rain, which makes it the right tool for bikepackers who ride through weather rather than hiding from it.
