Revelate Designs Terrapin System 8L — seat pack drawn to scale. 43.2 cm long, 15.2 cm tall, 15.2 cm wide. Reaches 43.2 cm back from the seatpost.
Revelate Designs Terrapin System 8L, drawn to scale from the dimensions we hold: 43.2 × 15.2 × 15.2 cm. The length is how far it reaches back behind the seatpost, so it is also your tyre-clearance figure. Every bag on this site is drawn at the same scale, so you can compare two of them directly.

How much room does it need?

This pack measures 43.2cm long and 15.2cm deep. Length is how far it reaches behind your saddle, and it's what drives sway — a long pack is a longer lever on the seatpost. Depth is what competes with your rear tire once the pack sags under load.

Across the 18 seat packs we hold dimensions for — which run from 24cm to 67cm — this one reaches further back than 4 of them, and hangs deeper than 2.

The other number that decides this — how much seatpost you have showing above the collar — depends on your leg length rather than your frame, and makers almost never publish a minimum. So measure from the top of your seat collar to the bottom of your saddle rails, then check it against the mounting hardware on the product page. If you run a dropper post, look for a pack that mounts to the saddle rails alone.

Revelate Designs Terrapin System 8L — Specs & Analysis

Manufacturer specifications, compared against every other seat bags in our database. We do not test gear in the field — we measure, verify, and compare.

The smaller Terrapin: 8 liters, 43.2cm long, and built as a waterproof dry bag that slides into a separate support holster. That two-part design is the whole idea — the bag comes out at camp and the holster stays bolted to the bike.

Most seat packs are one object that straps to your post and saddle rails, which means unpacking at camp involves wrestling gear out of a hole while the bag dangles. Revelate's Terrapin splits the job in two: an RF-welded waterproof dry bag, and a holster that holds it.

Pull the dry bag out and you have a normal dry bag you can carry into a tent. The holster stays on the bike. Anyone who has tried to find a headtorch inside a mounted seat pack in the rain understands why this matters.

At 43.2cm the 8L is meaningfully shorter than the 14L version and shorter than most of the seat packs we hold dimensions for. Length is the number that decides whether a seat pack works on your frame — it sets how far the load sits behind the saddle, and a long pack is a longer lever making a bigger swing. If you're on a small frame or short of room behind the saddle, the 8L is the Terrapin that fits.

482g is not light for 8 liters, and the honest reason is that you're carrying two things: 13oz of holster and 4oz of dry bag. The holster is Revelate's answer to the sway a strap-only pack has to fight, so the weight is buying structure rather than fabric.

One limitation to be clear about: this is not dropper-compatible. It mounts to the seatpost as well as the rails. If you run a dropper, Revelate's own rail-only Shrew is the answer instead.

Who Is the Revelate Designs Terrapin System 8L Best For?

Riders on smaller frames who want a seat pack they can unload without unmounting. If that describes your riding style, the Terrapin System 8L should be at the top of your shortlist. It sits in the Seat Bags category alongside 17 other products we track.

How It Compares

At 482g and $209, the Terrapin System 8L is 340g heavier than the lightest option in this category (the Revelate Designs ECOPAK Shrew Seat Bag at 142g). The most budget-friendly option is the Topeak BackLoader 10L at $70.

The price-to-weight ratio comes in at $43 per 100g — a premium price point, but you're paying for quality, materials, and design that justify the investment for serious bikepackers.

The Bottom Line

We haven't scored the Revelate Designs Terrapin System 8L, and neither has anyone else we can cite. It's here for its verified specifications and dimensions, which is what the fit tools run on — a score is an editorial judgement, and we don't hand one out until someone has a basis for it. What this page can tell you is measured: 482g, $209, and how both sit against every other seat bags product we track.

The price and weight above have not yet been checked against the manufacturer's own page. We are working through the catalogue and saying so as we go, rather than letting silence imply otherwise.

Specifications and dimensions come from the sources listed above. Where a page draws on first-hand riding, it says so.
