Revelate Designs Mag-Tank— Specs & Analysis

Manufacturer specifications, compared against every other top tube & feed bags in our database. We do not test gear in the field — we measure, verify, and compare.

Revelate's current Mag-Tank, distinct from the older MagTank 2000 we also list. 0.5 liters, magnetic closure, and silicone mounting pads that stop it rotating on a round top tube.

There are two Mag-Tanks in circulation and it confuses everybody, so: the MagTank 2000 is the older, larger one at 1.4 liters, and it's still sold. This is the current Mag-Tank at 0.5 liters. Same magnetic closure idea, different bag.

The magnet is the feature. A zipped top tube bag needs two hands or a lot of faith to open at speed; a magnetic flap opens with a thumb and shuts itself when you let go. On a long day where you're eating on schedule rather than when you stop, that's not a gimmick.

The honest problem with this bag is the weight. 187g for 0.5 liters makes it one of the heaviest top tube bags per liter in our database — Apidura moves four times the volume for slightly more weight. What you're carrying is the magnet hardware, the semi-rigid structure that keeps the mouth open, and the silicone mounting pads.

Those pads are worth defending, though. Strap-mounted bags on round tubes rotate, and on washboard they do it fast. A high-friction pad between bag and tube is the difference between a bag that stays put and one you keep straightening.

At 22.9 x 11.4 x 7cm it's a normal-sized top tube bag by footprint. Revelate describes it as weatherproof welded storage rather than a fully sealed dry bag — a magnetic flap is not a waterproof closure and they don't claim it is.

$95, which is a lot for half a liter. You're paying for the closure and for a bag built in Anchorage.

Who Is the Revelate Designs Mag-Tank Best For?

Riders who want one-handed food access and will pay for the closure. If that describes your riding style, the Mag-Tank should be at the top of your shortlist. It sits in the Top Tube & Feed Bags category alongside 12other products we've reviewed.

How It Compares

At 187g and $95, the Mag-Tank is 142g heavier than the lightest option in this category (the Oveja Negra Chuckbucket Feedbag at 45g). The most budget-friendly option is the Blackburn Outpost Top Tube Bag at $35.

The price-to-weight ratio comes in at $51 per 100g — a premium price point, but you're paying for quality, materials, and design that justify the investment for serious bikepackers.
