Hotrod 110 Rear Light

Rear visibility might be the single most important safety investment a bikepacker can make, and the Cygolite Hotrod 110 makes it affordable and dead simple. At 110 lumens, it's among the brightest dedicated rear lights in its price class, and the wide-angle CoB (chip-on-board) LED array spreads light across a 270-degree arc. Motorists approaching from oblique angles — exactly the scenarios where you're hardest to see — still get a clear visual warning.

Six modes give you genuine versatility. The steady high mode is great for low-visibility conditions like fog or dusk. The rapid flash draws maximum attention on busy highways. And the subtle pulse mode conserves battery while maintaining visibility for quieter rural roads. We typically run the 15-lumen pulse mode on empty backroads and switch to full flash when traffic picks up.

Runtime ranges from about 2 hours on steady high to nearly 50 hours on the lowest pulse mode. For multi-day bikepacking trips, the lower modes can last an entire trip on a single charge. USB charging takes about 2 hours from empty, and the micro-USB port is sealed behind a tight rubber flap.

The integrated mounting clip is cleverly designed. It slides over seatposts up to 34.9 mm, clips to bag straps, or even attaches to jersey pockets. This flexibility matters for bikepackers because seat bags often block traditional seatpost-mounted lights. Clipping the Hotrod to the back of a saddle bag or a rear rack strap keeps it visible where a rigid mount might be impossible.

Durability reports are consistently good. The polycarbonate body tends to survive drops onto pavement and gravel without cracking. Water resistance is rated IPX4, which handles rain and splashes but won't survive submersion. For rear lights that are somewhat sheltered from direct spray by the rider's body, this is adequate.

At $35, the Hotrod 110 is borderline disposable pricing for a genuinely effective safety light. Carry one as your primary rear and stash a second in your frame bag as a backup. Your visibility — and safety — on the road deserves at least this much investment.
