Ion Comp R Front Light

Bontrager's Ion Comp R fills an important niche in the bikepacker's lighting kit — the affordable, lightweight, be-seen daytime light that doubles as adequate illumination for short after-dark stretches. At 90 grams with its mount, it's light enough that carrying it even on weight-conscious setups is a no-brainer.

The 700-lumen max output won't win any night-riding contests, but that's not really the point. The Ion Comp R shines — literally — as a daytime visible light. Its focused flash pattern is visible from over a mile in direct sunlight, making you dramatically more visible to overtaking and oncoming motorists on rural highways. For bikepackers sharing roads with fast-moving traffic, this visibility can be genuinely lifesaving.

Runtime on the flash mode is impressive at around 12 hours, meaning you can run it all day without worry. On the solid low beam at 200 lumens, you get about 3 hours of illumination — enough for a careful ride to camp after sunset. Pairing it with a more powerful primary headlight covers all scenarios.

The Blendr mounting system is a mixed bag. Trek and Bontrager owners with compatible stems get an ultra-clean integrated mount. Everyone else uses the included rubber strap mount, which works fine but looks less polished. The strap mount does have the advantage of fitting virtually any handlebar diameter.

Micro-USB charging feels dated in 2026, and that's a legitimate complaint. With every other device in your bikepacking kit moving to USB-C, carrying an extra cable just for your front light is annoying. Bontrager will likely update this in the next generation, but for now, it's an inconvenience.

For the price, the Ion Comp R is hard to fault. It does its primary job — daytime visibility — exceptionally well, and it provides enough light for low-speed nighttime riding in a pinch. As a sole headlight for dedicated night riding, look elsewhere. As a lightweight safety light that can double as backup illumination, it's a smart addition to any kit.
