Surly TrollGeometry & Bikepacking Bag Fit2017

Discontinued. Surly no longer lists the Troll. It's here because these frames stay in circulation second-hand and the geometry is still what you need to pick bags — but you won't find one new.

Surly Troll frame geometry, drawn to scale

Every tube angle and length below is from the published chart, not an illustration. The front triangle area is the number that decides which frame bags fit — and it changes a lot across sizes.

Surly Troll — XS. Front triangle ≈ 867 cm² · effective top tube 545mm · seat tube 336mm
Surly Troll in size XS, drawn to scale from Surly's published geometry. The shaded area is the front triangle — roughly 867 cm² of space for a frame bag. Wheels are indicative; frame lines are accurate.
Surly Troll — S. Front triangle ≈ 1096 cm² · effective top tube 570mm · seat tube 406mm
Surly Troll in size S, drawn to scale from Surly's published geometry. The shaded area is the front triangle — roughly 1096 cm² of space for a frame bag. Wheels are indicative; frame lines are accurate.
Surly Troll — M. Front triangle ≈ 1288 cm² · effective top tube 595mm · seat tube 457mm
Surly Troll in size M, drawn to scale from Surly's published geometry. The shaded area is the front triangle — roughly 1288 cm² of space for a frame bag. Wheels are indicative; frame lines are accurate.
Surly Troll — L. Front triangle ≈ 1481 cm² · effective top tube 615mm · seat tube 508mm
Surly Troll in size L, drawn to scale from Surly's published geometry. The shaded area is the front triangle — roughly 1481 cm² of space for a frame bag. Wheels are indicative; frame lines are accurate.
Surly Troll — XL. Front triangle ≈ 1686 cm² · effective top tube 630mm · seat tube 559mm
Surly Troll in size XL, drawn to scale from Surly's published geometry. The shaded area is the front triangle — roughly 1686 cm² of space for a frame bag. Wheels are indicative; frame lines are accurate.

Bottom bracket height

Roughly 297mm off the ground. Surlydoesn't publish this directly — we derive it from their BB drop and a typical 67.4cm tyre diameter, so treat it as indicative rather than exact. It changes with the tyre you fit. Lower means more stable and more pedal strikes; higher means the opposite.

Which frame bags fit

Every frame bag we track, checked against this frame's published geometry. Pick your size.

Checking 12 frame bags against a 595mm effective top tube and 457mm seat tube. 12 fit.

Read these as conservative. This size has a steeply sloping top tube — the seat tube is only 77% of the effective top tube. Bag makers publish a minimum seat tube length assuming a roughly level top tube, so on a frame like this the comparison understates how much room you actually have. The front triangle here is about 1288 cm², which is the number that actually decides what fits. Several bags marked unlikely below will physically fit. Half-frame bags don't depend on seat tube length at all.

Frame bag fit is calculated from Surly's published geometry, so it's as reliable as their chart. Seat packs and handlebar rolls depend on your exposed seatpost and bar width, which no geometry table lists — the bag finder covers those once you add your own measurements.
